MAKE AN INFORMED PURCHASE BY UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AWD AND 4WD

December 30th, 2017 by

If you are in the market for a new vehicle with some off-road capabilities, then you certainly have many options available and choices to make. That is why it is important to understand that there is a difference between all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

An all-wheel drive vehicle operates exclusively in AWD mode. It continuously monitors traction at all four wheels, and when slippage is detected it will automatically reroute power according through its system of three differentials (front, center, and rear) to maintain the best traction for the vehicle at all times.

Four-wheel drive puts the control of that function in the driver’s hands. A 4WD vehicle uses two differentials (front and rear) and a transfer case to distribute the power to the four wheels when engaged. One of the positive points about this setup is that the vehicle can be used in 2WD mode for regular daily driving, improving its fuel efficiency.
